‘Community’ Resurrected for Season 6 by Yahoo
Greendale is not dead. In a shocking move, Community,
cancelled by NBC after five seasons, has been brought back to life by
Yahoo, which will air a new season on its video platform, Yahoo Screen this fall.
Community was picked up for a 13-episode sixth season. Creator Dan Harmon released a statement with his usual wit and sophomoric humor, saying “”I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!”
The renewal is something the show itself had predicted long ago when it spawned the hashtag #SixSeasonandaMovie. The term was originally used by Abed to describe his feelings about the future success of NBC’s superhero drama The Cape (cancelled after one season), but it was quickly adopted by Community fans hoping the phrase would apply to the show. I assume Harmon and company are already preparing for the inevitable Kickstarter campaign to fund the movie after the sixth season ends.
The news also means the world wasn’t destroyed by a giant asteroid. In the fifth season finale, Abed mentioned to Annie that they would be back, and if not, it meant a giant asteroid had destroyed the planet. He added “That’s canon” with a meta nod to the camera.
But for now, all Human Beings can rejoice knowing that, thanks to Yahoo, Community will live again.
