Flingo adds support from Mark Cuban in latest funding round

Smart TV app publisher Flingo, which in February announced it raised $7 million in a funding round led by VC firm August Capital, today said it added another $1 million to the total with the help of a major name in industry, Mark Cuban. The cash will be used to help Flingo expand its device footprint on additional smart TVs and devices; it already has presence on products from Samsung, LG, Vizio, Sanyo, Insignia, Western Digital and Netgear.
CBS Q1 results show online video content deals are driving growth

CBS Chief Les Moonves Tuesday said digital licensing had a “huge impact” on the network’s record first quarter earnings and revenues, its best since the 2006 with Viacom. “The transformation of CBS’s business model continues, and I am extremely pleased that we posted record results,” said Moonves. “Our ability to capitalize on the fundamental shifts in our industry has led to the growth of significant new revenue streams.” The company reported earnings of $363 million, or 54 cents per diluted share, up 80 percent compared with $202 million, or 29 cents per diluted share in the year-ago period. Revenue rose 12 percent to $3.9 billion

A handful of Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) subscribers have asked a federal appeals court to overturn a $27.2 million class-action settlement that they say unfairly gives plaintiffs’ lawyers over $8 million in fees for bringing suit over the marketing agreement the movie service company entered into with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT). The settlement calls for members of the class to receive a pro-rata share of the $27 million settlement amount.

Startup online video editing platform WeVideo, which started out its life as an educational tool for school children in Europe, has landed $19.2 million in a Series A funding round. The fundraising round, led by Crest Capital Ventures of Houston, will be used to help the company gain more of a global audience, a company statement noted. Founded in 2011 by Norway-based Inspera, WeVideo allows users to collaborate on projects.
Soft European market knocks Harmonic Q1 earnings

A slow start and a soft European market cost Harmonic (Nasdaq:HLIT) in the first quarter of 2012. The video infrastructure company, in its preliminary Q1 earnings, reported net revenue of $127.7 million, down roughly 4 percent from $132.8 million a year ago.
NimbleTV launches ‘game-changing’ TV platform

NimbleTV launched what the company said is a “game-changing,” subscription-based TV platform that allows users to stream cable or satellite programming to any connected device without a set-top box or other equipment. The cloud-based software, which allows users to view programming wherever they are, includes social tools and the ability to record shows. New York-based NimbleTV announced this week it will initially offer service in the United States and India, and then will expand to other countries. The global platform will be available as a private, beta offering to consumers beginning next week
