US ranks 13th globally in average Internet connection speed

Connected-TV shipments globally to nearly triple by 2016

The number of connected televisions expected to ship worldwide by 2016 could nearly triple from 2011, with revenues reaching $117 billion, a new report from IMS Research forecasts. Only 25 percent of TVs shipped in 2011 were Internet-ready, said IMS. That number is expected to reach 70 percent as the industry increasingly makes Internet-connectivity ubiquitous in new televisions

Ooyala CEO: Online video industry is at an inflection point

Sitting under a teal beach umbrella, next to a gleaming, polished aluminum Airstream trailer in the parking lot of the Las Vegas Convention Center during the NAB trade show last week, Ooyala CEO Jay Fulcher looked the picture of contentment. And why not? Ooyala has had a solid three-year run under his leadership, is growing customers, employees and, most importantly, revenue. Fulcher said the venture-capitalized, privately held company saw greater that 100 percent growth in 2011 for the third year in a row, has topped 500 the customer mark — many of which, like ESPN, are legitimate A-listers — and is causing some buzz in it sector.
WeVideo scores $19.2M in Series A funding round

Startup online video editing platform WeVideo, which started out its life as an educational tool for school children in Europe, has landed $19.2 million in a Series A funding round. The fundraising round, led by Crest Capital Ventures of Houston, will be used to help the company gain more of a global audience, a company statement noted. Founded in 2011 by Norway-based Inspera, WeVideo allows users to collaborate on projects.

LAS VEGAS–Universal Sports Network is using Brightcove’s (Nasdaq: BCOV) Video Cloud online video platform to deliver live and on-demand sports coverage to its website UniversalSports.com. The company today said it would deliver more than 2,000 hours of original, Olympic, adventure and endurance sports programming to both Adobe Flash and HTML5 desktops and devices.
