CBS rolls out branded social media hub to engage viewers

Content owners have been attracted to social media and its potential for engaging viewers and firming up their connection with them, building loyalty–and buzz–in the process. While Facebook and Twitter offer easy access solutions, CBS Interactive Entertainment (NYSE: CBS) this week decided to launch its own social platform–CBS Connect–to allow it to make that connection a little more network specific.
EdgeCast rolls out federated CDN platform

Content delivery network EdgeCast Networks has launched its OpenCDN federation platform, allowing network operators to cache customer content in markets and regions where they have no infrastructure. The platform is an alternative to the traditional geoexpansion/network investment tradeoffs operators have struggled with. EdgeCast also announced it has recently been granted several patents on techniques relating to CDN interconnection, broadening its intellectual property portfolio to include CDN federation. Current participants in the EdgeCast federation include a large, tier-one North American operator as well as Pacnet, one of Asia’s largest carriers. Federation allows operators to scale better, offering the CDN capabilities of their network beyond their own regional customer base.

blinkx deal with AnyClip gives users access to clips from 12,000 films

Video search engine blinkx is partnering with AnyClip for access to searchable clips from over 12,000 feature films. The deal allows blinkx users to search and watch their favorite scenes and moments from titles owned by Warner Brothers, Universal Studios, Vivendi Entertainment, First Look and Virgil Films. AnyClip tags, extracts and indexes more than 5,000 individual pieces of metadata from each full-length feature film. Users can search using snippets of dialogue, actors, props, and much more.
Reported Apple iTV prototype stirs Internet rumors

Yet another reported Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) smart TV sighting has the Internet abuzz. According to the Cult of Mac , the long-awaited connected TV is similar in appearance to existing Cinema Displays, comes with an iSight camera built in that’s capable of following a user as they move around the room, and to zoom in on their face, allowing them to make video calls and to videoconference. The unnamed source cited in the article also said the new TV brings Siri, Apple’s voice-activated virtual assistant to the living room. Paul Gagnon, director of North American TV Research for NPD DisplaySearch, said it’s likely Apple will roll out a line of TVs this year, pointing out that Apple’s Chinese supplier, Foxconn, has invested $1.6 billion in Sharp’s TV unit, which can make panels up to 60-inches. He expects two to four models ranging from 40-inches to 60-inches with 1920 x 1080p resolution
