We’ve reported on many schools, colleges and universities implementing iPads into their classrooms and curriculums this fall and with that, textbook publishers and developers are jumping on the education technology bandwagon. Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) announced a year long pilot program of a full-curriculum iPad Algebra app today. Together with six schools in California, HMH will pilot their Algebra app and launch Fuse, “a new mode of curriculum delivery where where interactive platforms and mobile devices bring learning to life for students.” The iPad’s interactive environment will allow students to receive feedback on practice questions, write and save notes, receive guided instruction, access video lessons and more with the simple touch of a finger. The use of Fuse and the HMH app will also help teachers tailor their curriculum to meet the individual needs of their students while providing student-specific performance feedback.
The Stable Boy and the iPad

It’s easy to be a knee-jerk cynic about Steve Jobs. After all, this is a man who seemingly can’t describe a product made by Apple without using the words “revolutionary” and/or “magical.” Even techno-crud like the MacBook Air and Apple TV. But there are moments when you simply can’t deny the man’s genius
Free ZumoCast App Streams Music, Movies From Computer To iPad, iPhone

A new app launched today should go a long way to eliminating iDevice storage limitations. ZumoCast is a free app that lets users stream content — videos, music or images — from their computer to their iPad , iPhone or iPod. I’ve spent the last few days playing around with an advance copy, and I’m pretty stunned with how well this app is put together. Streamed movies are transcoded seamlessly on the fly in the background, and streamed music sounds fantastic — even over 3G

Flickr offers its own iPhone app with basic features, but Yahoo’s photo-sharing service has yet to really embrace the iPad . Meanwhile, developers have seized the opportunity to release their own iPad Flickr clients, like Keeple’s Flickr Studio. Flickr Studio, like Flickpad, Photo Pad, and others, is essentially a native iOS interface for Flickr, with large buttons and a clean layout maximized for the iPad’s display. You can browse your photos, videos, sets, and collections, check out your friends’s latest shots, or explore the entirety of Flickr

Interview: Author Susan Orlean on her life with the iPad
September 8, 2010 by ipad news · Leave a Comment
Susan Orlean has become a geek, something that simultaneously amuses and mildly horrifies her. Orlean has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1992, and is known for her richly detailed features about places and people. Orlean’s focus is often on individuals outside the public eye, whom she dissects in the gentlest of ways to reveal what makes them tick. Her book The Orchid Thief , looking at how orchid collecting and cultivation leads people to odd acts, was made into the quirky film “Adaptation.” Lately, however, Orlean has been tearing up the techie side of things. The writer, who lives with her husband and 5-year-old son (and 10 chickens) in the Hudson Valley in New York, has amassed 70,000 followers on Twitter, and writes regular blog entries for The New Yorker.

“‘This has become known as the iPad class,’ Corey Angst, assistant professor of management at the University of Notre Dame, told his students on their first day of class Aug. 24,” Shannon Chapra reports for Notre Dame News. “‘It’s actually not…it’s ‘Project Management.’” “A member of Notre Dame’s ePublishing Working Group, Angst is debuting the University’s first and only class taught using Apple’s new wireless tablet computer to replace traditional textbooks,” Chapra reports. “The course is part of a unique, year-long Notre Dame study of eReaders, and Angst is conducting the first phase using iPads , which just went on sale to the public in April.”
Times for iPad Review

Newspaper-like feed reader removes most of what’s frustrating about RSS 4 out of 5 mice I’ve almost completely given up on the idea of RSS feed readers. Too much effort, too much management, too much to keep up with for the simple pleasure of being able to read a few articles by my favorite writers on the Web. That is until I started playing with Acrylic Software’s new Times for iPad app. Where other feed readers fail by assuming, incorrectly in my case, that I want to read every bloody thing written on someone’s Website, Times understands that, just as with a normal newspaper, if you miss a few days you’re not going to unwrap every issue and read all the articles you’ve missed.
Apple forecast to sell 28M iPads in 2011, chipping away at PC sales
September 8, 2010 by ipad news · Leave a Comment
Apple’s competitively priced iPad is expected to reduce sales of low-end notebook PCs in 2011, when consumers are projected to buy at least 28 million of the touchscreen tablet, one analyst believes. Maynard Um with UBS Investment Research issued a note to investors this week, in which he increased his price target for AAPL stock to $350, up from $340. He said there is no evidence that the iPad is having a negative effect on Mac sales, but it is “adversely affecting the PC industry.” “Sales of traditional notebooks appear to be feeling pressure from the iPad , causing a scramble by vendors to launch iPad -like tablets,” Um wrote.
