Blu-ray 3D Movie Playback With PC on a 3D HDTV Using HDMI 1.4

Following up on the story about the Roxio Cineplayer BD With 3D not being available anymore and the fact that there remain only three software Blu-ray 3D-capable players I’ve decided to check the current situation with them as well. I often get questions if somebody would be able to watch 3D movies on his old PC or laptop on a new 3D HDTV, something that seems easy at first, but things may get problematic depending on what is the video card in the system. The problem is that not all software Blu-ray 3D players support every popular 3D output mode and not output modes are available for all output formats.

Last year YouTube has introduced a new function allowing users to upload 2D videos and then have them autoconverted from 2D to 3D by YouTube and today this beta functionality has been further expanded. Now every user can select to see an automatic 2D to 3D conversion for short-form videos uploaded in 1080p resolutions, there is no more need for the owner of the clip to select that he wants it autoconverted. You can activate the 2D-to-3D autoconversion feature by clicking on the Options icon (the one with a gear) in the player and then clicking on the 3D button that will appear on the left. When you activate the 3D autoconversion feature of YouTube you will be able to select from less available resolutions up to 720p

Toshiba has announced an upcoming 17.3-inch gaming laptop in the form of Qosmio X870 that will be equipped with a 120Hz LCD panel and support Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology. What is interesting about this announcement is the fact that Toshiba does not yet announce what kind of GPU the laptop will have inside, they just say “Next generation NVIDIA GPUs”, neither they say what will be the CPU inside, just “Latest Intel processors”. This information, along with the fact that the Toshiba Qosmio X870 should be available from Q2 2012 means just one thing, this laptop should most likely be getting the much anticipated and rumored a lot mobile Kepler graphics along with Intel’s new Ivy Bridge mobile platform… Toshiba Qosmio X870 details: – Latest Intel processors – Next generation NVIDIA GPUs – 17.3″ (43.9cm) TruBrite Full HD screen with LED backlighting (1920×1080p, 16:9, 5ms response time) – Up to 2TB hard drive or hybrid drive SSD option – Optional Blu-ray ROM or DVD SuperMulti drives – Resolution+ upscaling technology – 4x USB 3.0 including 2x Sleep-and-Charge USB – HDMI, RGB connectivity – Gigabit Ethernet LAN – Bluetooth 4.0 – Dedicated headphone port & microphone port with Sleep-and-Music – Full HD web camera with Face Recognition – Red backlit tiled keyboard – Large clickpad with multi-touch control – Harman Kardon stereo speakers with Slip Stream technology, SRS Premium Sound 3D And apart from using a 120Hz Full HD LCD panel, bundles with 3D Vision active shutter glasses, the new mobile gaming solution from Toshiba should also come with HDMI 1.4 support for use with 3D HDTVs and 2D to 3D conversion functionality for DVD movies. It has not been yet revealed if the Toshiba Qosmio X870 laptop will feature a second generation of 3D Vision glasses and if the display will be supporting the 3D Lightboost technology. And considering the fact that Toshiba did not actually have a lot to say about the most important specs of the laptop you’d think that they should’ve at least used the opportunity to talk about these features

Oil Rush, a real-time naval strategy game, based on the Unigine engine and made by the guys developing it has just been updated to version 1.07 bringing improved 3D Vision support as well as more depth available when using 3D Vision. Not that the game was not working quite well in stereo 3D mode with 3D Vision before, but it had some small issues that needed to be resolved and some things to be improved and Unigine has done a good job at that with the new update. And the game itself also supports other stereoscopic 3D modes besides 3D Vision… Here is the lift of changes in version 1.07 : – Improved NVIDIA 3DVision support. – Tuned 3D Vision settings: more depth.

First Impressions from LG Optimus 3D with Android 2.3.5 (V21b)

I was finally able to get the new firmware update V21b for the LG Optimus 3D smartphone that brings new and improved stereo 3D features for the device as well as other non-3D related ones and also updates the OS to Android 2.3.5. So after updating the firmware to V21b (dated 13th December) I tried the new features such as the ability to use the light and image stabilization when shooting in 3D mode, the new video editor, the updated 3D Game Converter, improved 2D to 3D conversion… so here are my first impressions. I’m starting with the camera application and the new things regarding the ability to record still photos in 3D and 3D videos as this is one of the things with most improvements. The most important thing here is the improvement of the bitrate of the 3D video recording, previously the device recorded 720p (half horizontal resolution) 3D video with 6 Megabits bitrate and now it uses double that bitrate, so 12 Mbps

If you are looking for an active DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter for use together with a laptop that only has a DisplayPort interface available, but you want to be able to connect a 3D-capable LCD monitor with a DVI interface, then Club 3D might have exactly what you need. The Club 3D CAC-1051 DisplayPort to active DVI Dual-Link stereo 3D adapter is a claimed to be compatible with both AMD HD3D technology and Nvidia 3D Vision technology, so it should work problem free for both. According to the manufacturer the adapter should also work with AMD Eyefinity and Nvidia 3D Vision Surround setups as well, so not only useable for laptops, but also for desktop systems what feature more DisplayPort connectors than DVI for example and you have 2D or 3D monitors that don’t have DisplayPort support. The adapter comes with a standard DisplayPort input (not a mini one) and standard size digital only DVI-D output, there is an extra USB connector that needs to be plugged in a free connector in order to provide the extra power required for the adapter. So if you are looking for an active DP to DL-DVI adapter to go with your stereo 3D setup this one should work flawlessly, as not all such adapters may provide you with a problem free experience when used for building a stereoscopic 3D setup
