Netflix said its planning to add subtitles to 80 percent of its content library by the end of 2011, although the service won’t be available on all devices. Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt said some 30 percent of current instant watch titles–about 3,500 TV episodes and movies–already are subtitled, and said more would be added each week. Netflix already has subtitles on all non-English content. Devices that support subtitles include: PCs and Macs, Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3, GoogleTV, and the Boxee Box. Hunt said he anticipates Roku and the Xbox 360 will support subtitles later this year, adding that most new Netflix ready devices released this summer or later will support subtitles
Is Google planning challenge of Netflix in movie streaming market?

According to a published report, Google’s YouTube is planning to launch a subscription movie streaming service in the United Kingdom that would be similar to Netflix’s model, with users able to stream an unlimited amount of content for a flat fee. The New York Post reported that the search giant is targeting Europe-most likely starting in the U.K.-because the competition would be less fierce than it is in the United States. But Google, which has set aside $100 million for content deals this year, has had little success in the past in its dealing with Hollywood, one of, if not the largest, stumbling blocks it’s faced in its underwhelming Google TV launch. “Google is going to be launching channels in Europe and will launch a subscription video-on-demand service,” one Hollywood executive told The Post .

Redbox, Amazon want part of the streaming video market, plan two new services

A pair of Netflix wannabes have tossed their hats into the ring in the past few days; DVD kiosk operator Redbox last week said it has plans to roll out a streaming video service by the end of the year, possibly for $5 per month, and said it would likely partner with someone to deliver it for them, rather than go to the expense of building their own platform (see this article). On Tuesday, retail giant Amazon announced it, too, would be launching a streaming service. But, Amazon said, its service will be “free,” at least to subscribers of its Amazon Prime service, which gives members and their families unlimited two-day shipping on all items purchased through Amazon.com. The Amazon Prime service is $79 a year, about $6.58 a month (see this article).
Netflix adds CBS content as Hulu, Amazon burn… but watch out for Amazon

Netflix scored another win yesterday, announcing it had signed a deal with CBS-the same CBS that has so far refused to make a deal with Hulu-that will give Netflix subscribers streaming access to some current, and a lot of library content. The deal doesn’t get Netflix the cream of CBS’s TV offerings, but it’s not bad, Medium and Flashpoint from recent content, and older series like Frasier , Family Ties , Star Trek , the original Hawaii Five-O , Twin Peaks and The Twilight Zone . It’s got to be a kick in the pants for Hulu, which has content from ABC, NBC and Fox, although NBC–one of its owners along with Disney and News Corp.–also has a content deal with Netflix.

Online video platform Brightcove is taking advantage of what analysts say is a growing trend that will have greater penetration into the home than any other over-the-top delivery device, connected TVs, partnering with LG Electronics to give Brightcove customers the ability to publish and distribute their video content to LG NetCast-based Smart TVs. While the partnership will enable Brightcove customers to extend the reach of their video initiatives, it also gives consumers wider choice and control over news and entertainment programming through TV
